Addressing the Problem

Every day, thousands of individuals and families in Western New York struggle with food insecurity, while perfectly good food goes to waste.

Food Shuttle of WNY is dedicated to changing this. Our all-volunteer organization bridges the gap between surplus food and those in need, ensuring that no one goes hungry while food is discarded.

What we do

Food Shuttle of WNY is a 100% volunteer organization that transports surplus food from local grocery stores and restaurants to soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries.

How It Works

We pick up surplus food from supermarkets, restaurants, and other providers and deliver it to those in need using a need-to-match system.

Food Shuttle of WNY has been helping our community since 1988. We are the oldest organization of its kind in our area, and the only one run 100% by volunteers!

Step 1: Coordination and Matching

  • Each branch (Kenton, Southtowns, Amherst) has a coordinator to ensure efficient distribution.
  • Dispatchers match food donations with recipient organizations based on their specific needs.

Step 2: Food Donation Collection

  • Providers who have surplus food contact our dispatcher to schedule a pickup.
  • Example Providers: Supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, etc.
  • Volunteers use their own vehicles to transport the food.

Step 3: Food Delivery

  • Volunteers drive to a recipient’s location, unload the food, and sometimes assist with the storage.
  • Example Recipients: Soup kitchens, local shelters, and food pantries.
  • Delivery operations run every day of the week, only closing 7 days per year.
  • Drives are tailored to the abilities and schedules of our volunteers.

Step 4: Impact and Improvement

  • Regular reports are generated to track the number of deliveries, volume of food transported, and the number of people served.
  • Regular meetings are held to discuss and plan our activities and improvements.
